Of the many unique and interesting research projects supported by the ICF, perhaps none are more unique than two projects which explore the past and, to some degree, the future of modern financial economics.

Financial History

The ICF, in partnership with the Beinecke Rare Book Library at Yale University, has undertaken a fascinating research project to document the introduction and evolution of today's modern financial instruments. Spanning more than 4,000 years of history, this research (and accompanying book) traces the origins of financial instruments such as stocks, bonds, options, lotteries, and annuities back to historical civilizations in places such as Mesopotamia, ancient Rome, India, and China. Working with the Beinecke Library, the ICF has also purchased a collection of historical financial certificates, many of which are now on display at Yale University. Under the direction of ICF Fellows Will Goetzmann and Geert Rouwenhorst, the Center has also amassed a collection of historical financial data that includes everything from data on Greenbacks issued during the U.S. Civil War to historical price and dividend information from stock exchanges in London, New York, Shanghai and St. Petersburg.

China

Under the leadership of ICF Fellows Zhiwu Chen and Will Goetzmann, the Center currently supports of the most comprehensive research efforts to date focused on the development of China's modern financial markets. With daily news updates, a library of academic research articles and a large volume of press reports and brief notes covering everything from financial innovations to market regulations and freedom of the press, this initative provides a one-stop shop for researchers interested in learning more about the rapid changes taking place in China's capital markets. The ICF also held a China Conference in April 2006 that brought together leaders from all over the world to discuss the issues and opportunities present in today's China.
